January - April 2023

Allocation of Resources:

  • Provisions: ₦269,200 among 22 families residing in Osun, Kwara, and Gombe states.

  • Education: ₦100,000 for the payment of school fees for one student.

  • Health: ₦7,000 for the purchase of necessary medicines.

  • Ramadan: ₦250,000 to support 50 orphans for the entire month.

Amidst the ongoing conflicts worldwide, which pose a threat to people’s livelihoods and disrupt peace, it is imperative that we remain mindful of our responsibility to assist one another.

The global disruption of supply chains, coupled with the increased cost of production in Nigeria throughout the past year, has led to an unprecedented inflation rate. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports that 133 million Nigerians are living in multidimensional poverty. Multidimensional poverty, as defined by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, encompasses various forms of deprivation experienced by individuals, such as inadequate access to healthcare, limited educational opportunities, substandard living conditions, and residing in environmentally hazardous areas. In 2019, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reported that slightly over 98 million Nigerians were living in multidimensional poverty. This indicates a distressing increase of 35 million Nigerians who have slipped into poverty within a span of two years.

Simultaneously, the NBS announced a significant surge in the consumer price index (CPI), which measures the rate of price changes for goods and services. By the end of 2022, the CPI had risen by 5.87% compared to January 2022 (from 15.60% in January 2022 to 21.47% in November 2022). This escalation can be attributed to the rising costs of imports, currency depreciation, and the general increase in production expenses.

Moreover, the minimum wage in Nigeria remains disproportionately low in relation to the cost of living, perpetuating a growing disparity between income and expenditure.

In times like these, it is crucial to remember our obligation to assist those in need. As we embrace the incoming president-elect’s administration with its slogan of ‘renewed hope,’ we must not only rely on prayers and aspirations for a better future for the people but also actively contribute within our means. Even the smallest acts of support can have a profound impact, as every little act matters.
